With Tropical Cyclone Alfred expected to impact parts of NSW and QLD, the Swimming Pool & Spa Association (SPASA) urges all swimming pool and spa businesses in Southeast Queensland (SEQ) and northern NSW to take immediate action in preparing for the cyclone's arrival.
The cyclone is predicted to strike between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, posing risks of strong winds, power outages, and potential flooding to homes, building sites, and businesses.
As a minimum, SPASA recommends the following preparations:
Remove or secure any loose materials and debris, including chemical containers and pool-related equipment such as poles, nets, and covers
Clean up the site and empty rubbish bins and skips
Delay deliveries until after the cyclone has passed
Close all windows and doors in homes, sheds, and businesses to prevent internal damage
Notify clients who may be affected, advising them to inspect their surroundings and take necessary precautions
Pool builders should also consider the following additional measures:
Turn off power, gas, and water supplies to the construction site
Ensure sediment control measures are in place to divert water away from the premises, excavations, and neighbouring properties
Verify that temporary fencing is properly installed to withstand wind loads during the cyclone
Secure or remove any advertising banners to prevent them from becoming airborne and causing property damage or injury
Confirm that scaffolding is properly secured
Ensure all construction materials are securely fastened
Early preparation is critical, and SPASA members are encouraged to prepare for the worst-case scenario.
